For almost 160 years this site has been the home of local government and a place of civic pride and celebration. Visitor's from around the world come to see the courthouse, mural room and grounds. Hundreds get married in the Mural Room or on the Garden, every year.

The County Board of Supervisors caused the construction of this, now historic courthouse in 1926, after the smaller Greek-Revival courthouse was damaged in an earthquake of the previous year.

This page is provided as an easy way to share the final State Historic and draft National Historic Landmark Applications and supporting documentation. Some of these files are large, and may require several minutes to download. Please be patient.

To the amazement of many when told that this most beautify of courthouses is just a city landmark--we have undertaken to correct that with the filing of both a State Historic Landmark and National Historic Landmark Application.

The National Historic Landmark application has cleared the full hearing of the National Park System Advisory Board. The Board took action on Tuesday, December 1, 2004 in Coral Gables Florida to recommend designation of the Santa Barbara Courthouse, it be the 131 National Historic Landmark in California, 7th such landmark in Santa Barbara County.

The remaining step is the receipt of official notice from the Secretary of the Interior, anticipated to arrive in late February or Early March 2005.

Vallejo, CA---The State Historic Resources Commission designated the Santa Barbara County Courthouse a State Historic Landmark on Friday August 8, 2003.

Comments regarding these applications can be sent to the County Architect.
